To hand wash most vintage garments, use Luke warm water, a tablespoon of table salt (to control fabric bleeding) and a mild detergent like Woolite, Dreft, or Ivory soap flakes.
Cleaning vintage clothing from the later 1930s to 1940s should be ok.
